Is Guest Posting Still a Viable SEO Strategy?

Mail boxesThe practice of guest posting or guest blogging, once a well respected SEO practice, has become controversial. Some marketing experts, and even Google itself, are now discouraging this practice and associating it with spam or black hat SEO. What is the truth? Can it still be helpful to your site’s search engine ranking to write blog posts for other sites or will Google penalize you for this?

It’s very unlikely that guest blogging will ever be irrelevant or “dead.” It’s something that occurs every day on large authority sites and can still be a way to earn valuable links. However, you now have to be very careful about how you implement this technique. Because of Google updates such as Panda and Penguin, you definitely want to avoid having guest posts published on low quality sites, or sites that have no relevance to your own site’s topic. These are the kind of red flags that will make links worthless or worse.

On the other hand, if you contact popular, high traffic sites in your own niche and inquire if they would be interested in publishing a relevant article, you have a chance to build useful relationships and gain helpful links. To accomplish this, however, you have to submit content that’s genuinely helpful, relevant and unique.

Submitting guest posts, then, can still be a useful practice for SEO. From the point of view of the search engines, a guest post is no different from any other type of content. What counts is not who wrote a particular post, but whether it’s well written, relevant and a good match for the site.
